1836 $1 GOBRECHT ORIGINAL ALIGNMENT I PR63 PCGS CAC
Liberty Seated Dollar
The 1836 Gobrecht Dollar represents one of the most significant turning points in American coinage, combining technical innovation, artistic refinement, and monetary reintroduction. With a modest mintage of approximately 1,000 pieces and an estimated 500 survivors, the Judd-60 Original Alignment I stands as the first emission of the Gobrecht dollar series and the first silver dollar struck by the United States Mint since 1804. These coins were produced primarily for presentation and testing purposes rather than widespread circulation, intended to reintroduce the silver dollar denomination to bankers and the financial community, who by 1836 were largely unfamiliar with its use. Struck from carefully burnished planchets, these issues occupy a transitional place between presentation strikings and later proof coinage, exhibiting reflective fields and frosted design motifs but without the uniform brilliance of later proofs. The artistry of the Gobrecht dollar is unparalleled among early U.S. silver types. Overall the Originals that are Coin Orientation are of similar rarity, but the Alignment I are highely sought after and finding one finer in PR64 CAC will cost well over $100,000 today. This specimen, certified PR63 by PCGS and endorsed by CAC, exemplifies both originality and strong visual appeal. The obverse exhibits a luminous golden-bronze and antique silver-gray base that transitions into rings of violet, blue, and steel-gray at the peripheries. The reverse is also showcases yellow hues like the obverse when tilted. The CAC sticker provides further assurance of superior preservation and aesthetic quality, placing this piece among the more desirable survivors in today’s marketplace. Auction records underscore the consistent demand for CAC-approved examples: in January 2025, a PR63 CAC realized $72,000 and prior for an Alignment 1 Original JR-60 all the way back to 2011, whilst a lower graded PR62 PCGS CAC sold for $42,000 08/23 HA or a non-CAC lower graded PR62 PCGS for $38,400 08/25 ST. Bear in mind not to confuse the Original and Restrike as they carry different prices and premiums like the PR63 PCGS CAC from 2020 restrike J-60 for $32,400. As the first silver dollar struck since 1804 and the inaugural issue of the Gobrecht design, this 1836 $1 Original Alignment I is not only a collectible but a landmark of American numismatic history.
