S-13, B-20, Low R.4. Among early large cent design types and dates, the classic rarity and centerpiece is the 1793 Liberty Cap cent — the first iteration of a design that would define the series through 1795. Struck in a mintage of just 11,056 pieces, with a survival estimate of roughly 450, this S-14, B-17, Low R.5 variety is immediately recognizable by the prominent, nearly vertical die crack extending from the E in LIBERTY through Liberty’s bust and down to the 3 in the date. On this PCGS VF20 CAC-certified example, that dramatic bisecting crack is bold and complete, revealing where the die had actually separated into two planes, resulting in sharper detail to the right of the fracture line. Though below the S-14 condition census, it is considerably finer than most survivors and exhibits pleasing bluish-steel surfaces accented by lighter brown splashes and only minor, inconsequential rim bumps. The coin is further distinguished by its excellent eye appeal and provenance from The J&J and R&R Gobrecht’s Raisinet Collection. The obverse displays a smooth, matte texture typical of well-circulated early copper, with medium chocolate-brown fields and deeper walnut recesses contrasting with lighter cinnamon highlights on Liberty’s cheek, jawline, and hair curls. A faint bluish-gray overtone, the product of age-induced surface chemistry, enhances its depth and originality. The reverse continues this rich palette with medium brown and chocolate hues accented by warmer russet-brown undertones within the wreath and ONE CENT inscription, while darker olive-gray shades cling to protected areas. Gentle bronze highlights on the wreath tips and bow knot reveal honest circulation wear without impairing the coin’s visual harmony. The surfaces are smooth and stable, with subtle micro-granularity and no distracting corrosion, preserving a balanced and historic appearance. Population figures underscore its importance, with just 10 certified at this grade level out of 48 total at PCGS and only 1 CAC-approved example out of 4. Valuations reflect its significance: PCGS Price Guide lists $50,000, CAC Price Guide $46,000, and this exact certification realized $51,600 at Heritage Auctions in January 2024, with the next CAC example in VF30 bringing $84,000 in April 2025.
