CAC VALUE - $72,000 - 1793 Flowing Hair Cent Chain AMERICA S-2 PCGS EF40 CAC. The 1793 Chain Cent is one of the most celebrated and historically important issues in American numismatics, representing the very first regular-issue coinage struck at the Philadelphia Mint for widespread circulation. With a modest mintage of just 36,103 pieces and an estimated surviving population of around 625 examples. The Chain Cent has long been a foundational rarity, revered by collectors as an icon of early federal coinage. The reverse design, featuring an interlocking chain intended to symbolize the union of the states, was instead criticized by contemporary observers as a symbol of bondage. This public disapproval led to its swift replacement by the Wreath Cent later in 1793, leaving the Chain Cent a fleeting but essential type in the series. The coin offered here is certified PCGS EF40 and endorsed by CAC for its quality within the grade. Both sides display richly original surfaces. The obverse reveals a palette of chocolate-brown blended with lighter golden-tan and autumnal highlights, particularly in the protected recesses of Liberty’s flowing hair. Subtle olive undertones add depth to the appearance. A few faint hairline grazes extend across the portrait into the right obverse field, but these features are minor and minimally distracting. The reverse exhibits smooth, even walnut and chestnut-brown coloration, with lighter accents bringing definition to the chain links and lettering. The surfaces are exceptionally well-preserved for the type, showing none of the heavy porosity or corrosion so often associated with early copper coinage. The eye appeal of this Chain Cent is particularly strong for the grade. The balance of color, smooth surfaces, and well-defined details makes this an outstanding representative of the type. With CAC Price Guide at $72,000 and PCGS Price Guide at $70,000 and a NON-CAC XF45 NGC example having just sold for $66,000 08/25 HA, we find this representing excellent value! More importantly this exact coin last year sold privately for over $80,000.
