In 1873, a slight increase in the authorized weight of the dime—from 38.4 grains to precisely 38.58 grains (2.5 grams)—prompted the U.S. Mint to modify the coin’s design. To signify this adjustment, small arrowheads were placed to the left and right of the date, a visual device also employed on the quarter and half dollar denominations that year. Dimes struck prior to this change in 1873 appear without arrows, while the “With Arrows” subtype spans the latter part of 1873 and all issues of 1874. Although the weight standard was retained beyond 1874, the arrowheads were subsequently removed, marking the end of this transitional subtype. The Liberty Seated design otherwise remained unchanged.
From a numismatic standpoint, this two-year subtype offers multiple acquisition opportunities. Business strike production was sufficient to ensure ready availability in circulated grades, with coins from Good to About Uncirculated encountered frequently. Mint State examples are available but are notably scarcer than their 1853–1855 “With Arrows” counterparts. The Proof mintage across both years totaled just 1,500 coins, making high-grade survivors particularly elusive, especially with strong mirrors or cameo contrast.
Of special interest to collectors are the Carson City issues, which were struck in significantly lower quantities. These coins are difficult to locate in any grade and are exceedingly rare in Uncirculated condition, commanding strong premiums when offered. Their combination of low mintage and Western branch mint origin makes them key items in any Liberty Seated dime type or date set.
Whether acquiring examples for a type set, a date run, or an advanced collection focusing on U.S. branch mints, the 1873–1874 With Arrows dimes stand as an important and identifiable subtype within the Liberty Seated series—historically significant, short-lived, and increasingly appreciated by discerning collectors.
