Early U.S. Dimes – The Capped Bust Series Begins
The 1809–1827 Capped Bust dime series represents one of the most iconic and collectible chapters in early American silver coinage. Introduced in 1809 and modeled after the design first seen on half dollars in 1807, this issue features Liberty wearing a cloth cap inscribed “LIBERTY”, with drapery at the shoulder and flowing hair—an enduring symbol of American independence.
The reverse showcases a detailed Heraldic Eagle with a shield, arrows, and olive branch, perched on a branch with a scroll above bearing E PLURIBUS UNUM. The surrounding inscription reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 10 C., marking the first regular issue dime series to include a denomination.
Why Collect This Coin:
Historic Design: Transitional coinage bridging early federal design and modern denominations
