1971–1978 Eisenhower Dollar | A Tribute to Ike and America's Space Legacy
The Eisenhower dollar, affectionately known as the "Ike Dollar," was issued for general circulation from 1971 through 1974, and again in 1977 and 1978. Named in honor of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the obverse features his stately profile, while the reverse—especially in the 1971–1974 issues—commemorates the Apollo 11 Moon landing, depicting an eagle landing on the lunar surface with Earth above.
These circulating coins were struck in a clad composition, consisting of a pure copper core bonded between layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel. Both business strikes and Proof versions were produced in this format.
Collectibility and Varieties
While not rare in lower grades, Eisenhower dollars have become highly collectible in Gem Mint State, driven largely by PCGS and NGC Registry Set competition. Key highlights include:
-
1972 Variety 2 (Type 2 reverse): This issue features a scarce design variant with a less-detailed Earth and fewer islands in the Caribbean. It’s significantly more valuable in high-grade Mint State, and sought after by variety specialists.
-
MS66 and Higher Grades: Common-date Ikes in MS66, MS67, and above regularly sell in three- or even four-figure price ranges, reflecting the scarcity of well-struck, high-end survivors.
Circulation and Historical Context
Despite its patriotic design and commemorative intent, the Eisenhower dollar saw limited acceptance in daily commerce. Its large size and heavy weight, combined with the continued printing of the $1 paper note, made it impractical for regular use. Most Ike dollars entered circulation primarily through casino slot machines or were retained as keepsakes and novelty items.
