The Post-1776 States Coinage includes purely American coins, minted between 1785 and 1788 in the newly formed states of Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Vermont. These early coins were primarily copper, created to address the need for small-denomination currency, except for the rare Brasher Half Doubloon and Doubloon, which were struck in gold.
