The 1984 Olympic $10 Gold Coin, issued for the Los Angeles Summer Olympics, marked the first U.S. gold commemorative coin in nearly 60 years. It was also the first coin to feature the “W” mintmark from the West Point Mint.
Since then, over 35 gold commemorative coins have been released, primarily in the $5 denomination, celebrating significant events and anniversaries. In 2000, the Bicentennial of the Library of Congress was honored with a unique $10 bimetallic coin, combining gold and platinum using the innovative European-style "ring" technique.
