Blazing Superb Gem with Exceptional Eye Appeal
The 1926 Philadelphia double eagle is a plentiful Saint-Gaudens issue in an absolute sense, with a mintage of 816,750 pieces and an estimated 149,166 survivors, but the character of the date changes dramatically at the Superb Gem level. This exceptional MS66+ resides near the very top of the PCGS population, with just seven examples certified finer, making it a noteworthy representative for an advanced Saint-Gaudens or Registry collection. The surfaces display brilliant yellow-gold color with warmer honey and subtle orange-gold accents, all energized by extraordinary mint luster. Blazing, swirling cartwheels sweep smoothly across the remarkably clean fields, producing the bold vibrance and almost glowing appearance expected from a premium Superb Gem. The strike is strong overall, with only a touch of softness in isolated areas, while Liberty’s hair, drapery, torch and olive branch remain impressively defined and the reverse eagle exhibits excellent detail throughout its layered plumage. Particularly impressive is the combination of booming luster and surface preservation: the broad fields remain unusually free of distracting contact, allowing the original mint frost and rich color to dominate the presentation. The result is a beautifully balanced coin with exceptional freshness and tremendous eye appeal, representing the 1926 at a level of quality encountered with considerable infrequency. Mintage: 816,750. Survival Estimate: 149,166. PCGS Price Guide: $10,000. PCGS POP: 72/7.
