Virtually Unsurpassable Superb Gem with Rich Orange-Gold Surfaces, Vibrant Satiny Luster, and Exceptional Eye Appeal.
The San Francisco Mint struck 796,000 Saint-Gaudens double eagles in 1916, the final issue produced before double eagle coinage was suspended during World War I, not to resume until 1920. With an estimated 26,500 survivors, the 1916-S remains readily obtainable in most Mint State grades, including MS65. However, the issue becomes considerably more challenging in MS66 and is exceptionally rare any finer. Its historical significance as the final prewar issue, combined with its substantial condition rarity at the Superb Gem level, makes it particularly desirable to advanced collectors.
This magnificent Superb Gem displays beautifully preserved orange-gold surfaces enriched by delicate pinkish-apricot and rose-gold highlights. Vibrant, satiny mint luster blankets both sides, lending the coin a wonderfully fresh appearance and outstanding eye appeal. The strike is exceptionally sharp, with crisp definition throughout Liberty's flowing gown, facial features, and the eagle's intricate plumage. The remarkably clean fields and minimally abraded devices further distinguish this impressive example.
With a PCGS population of 213 examples and just seven finer, this MS66 represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire one of the finest certified representatives of this challenging San Francisco issue. Its superb preservation, rich coloration, and exceptional visual appeal make it an outstanding candidate for an advanced Saint-Gaudens collection or competitive Registry Set. The PCGS Price Guide is $13,500, while a recent example realized $13,420 at Heritage Auctions in September 2026.
