Exceptional Frosty Luster, Attractive Golden Surfaces, and Outstanding Eye Appeal.
The Philadelphia Mint struck just 149,750 Saint-Gaudens double eagles in 1912, the only issue of the denomination produced that year. With an estimated 17,666 survivors, the 1912 is an essential acquisition for collectors assembling a complete date set, becoming increasingly challenging in the higher Mint State grades.
This beautiful Choice Mint State example displays attractive yellow-gold surfaces with subtle orange and rose-gold highlights. Strong, frosty mint luster radiates across both sides, producing a lively cartwheel effect and excellent overall eye appeal. The strike is sharp, with well-defined details throughout Liberty's flowing gown, the Capitol building, and the eagle's outstretched wings. The surfaces are pleasingly preserved, with relatively few distracting marks for the assigned grade.
An attractive, high-quality representative of this lower-mintage Philadelphia issue, combining strong technical merit, vibrant luster, and excellent visual appeal. The PCGS Price Guide is $7,500, with a reported population of 493 examples and 107 finer.
