Superb Gem with Rich Orange-Gold Surfaces, Vibrant Luster, and Exceptional Eye Appeal.
The Denver Mint struck 429,000 Saint-Gaudens double eagles in 1910, with an estimated 43,333 examples surviving today. While the 1910-D is readily obtainable through Gem MS65, the issue becomes considerably more challenging in MS66, with relatively few examples surviving in finer grades. Its availability in lower grades contrasts with the scarcity of exceptionally well-preserved Superb Gems, making high-grade examples particularly desirable to advanced collectors.
This magnificent Superb Gem displays rich orange-gold surfaces accented by delicate reddish-gold highlights. Vibrant, satiny mint luster blankets both sides, producing exceptional brilliance and outstanding eye appeal. The strike is sharp, with excellent definition throughout Liberty's flowing gown, facial features, and the eagle's intricately rendered plumage. The beautifully preserved surfaces exhibit only minor imperfections, lending the coin a remarkably fresh appearance for the assigned grade.
An impressive high-grade representative of the 1910-D, combining rich coloration, strong technical quality, and exceptional visual appeal. The PCGS population stands at 173 examples with just 21 finer, underscoring the challenge of acquiring this issue in Superb Gem condition. The PCGS Price Guide is $12,000, while a recent example realized $9,455 at Heritage Auctions in September 2026.
