A historic survivor from one of the scarcest Carson City gold issues, this 1877-CC $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle graded XF40 by PCGS and approved by CAC offers an outstanding combination of originality, preservation, and rarity. Both the obverse and reverse are enveloped in rich warm orange-gold coloration with delicate olive and faint reddish-gold undertones that have developed naturally over nearly 150 years. The surfaces are remarkably smooth for the grade, while attractive remnants of satiny mint luster remain visible within the protected areas surrounding the legends, stars, date, and devices. It has excellent eye appeal. Only 8,680 examples were produced, with an estimated 135 survivors believed to exist today across all grades, making this one of the key rarities of the Liberty Head Half Eagle series and an essential acquisition for collectors of Carson City gold. No recent sales are noted much less CAC, but a NON-CAC XF45 PCGS sold for $14,640 06/26 HA, a lower grade 1877-CC $5 VF35 PCGS NON-CAC sold for $18,000 08/22 SB and a non-CAC XF40 NGC sold for $13,200 04/22 SB, all of which makes the current guides seem quite low for this CAC Prices, and makes this an excellent purchase for this PCGS CAC example.
