1870 $1 J-1019 PR65 PCGS CAC

A Finest-Certified High Rarity-7 Indian Princess Dollar Pattern with CAC Approval, Gem Preservation and Striking Cameo-Like Eye Appeal.

A Rare Aluminum Pattern with Exceptional Contrast - James B. Longacre’s Indian Princess design is striking in dollar format. On the obverse, Liberty sits beside a globe inscribed LIBERTY, holding a pole topped by a Phrygian cap, with flags rising behind her. The reverse uses the familiar Seated Liberty dollar eagle. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge, this Judd-1019, Pollock-1154 pattern is a High Rarity-7 issue, with at least three examples confirmed. Its importance is matched by its presentation: pale silver devices stand against reflective fields with a delicate blue-gray cast, and the reverse shows especially strong contrast around the eagle and legends. The stars, folds of Liberty’s gown, shield, and eagle’s plumage are precisely rendered. Although PCGS graded the coin PR65 without a Cameo designation, the photographs show considerable visual contrast on both sides.

The Indian Princess dollar belongs to the experimental pattern coinage of 1870, when Mint engravers explored designs and compositions beyond those adopted for circulation. Aluminum was an unusual choice for a dollar-sized striking of the period; today, its bright, reflective surfaces give this rare design a character quite unlike a conventional silver dollar. PCGS identifies Judd-1019 as the plain-edge aluminum variety; the reeded-edge version mentioned in the supplied notes is the separate Judd-1018 variety.

The supplied figures list a PCGS Price Guide value of $14,500, with 2 graded PR65 and none finer, and a CAC Price Guide value of $12,000, with 1 approved in grade this example and none finer.
