1869-S $5 VF25 PCGS CAC

Toned Rare San Francisco Half Eagle

The 1869-S half eagle is an extraordinarily scarce issue from the early San Francisco Mint, where most examples entered circulation and remained there for decades throughout the rapidly developing American West. With an estimated survival of only 100 coins across all grades from a mintage of 31,000, the issue is rare in an absolute sense and particularly challenging with wholesome, original surfaces. This handsome VF example displays rich honey-gold color accented by warm copper and reddish-gold patina. Liberty’s portrait remains boldly outlined and the all-important S mintmark is sharp and unusually well defined, an especially desirable attribute for this heavily circulated frontier issue. Certified VF25 by PCGS and approved by CAC, this coin represents impressive quality for the grade and offers the originality, eye appeal and rarity sought by serious collectors of Liberty Head and San Francisco gold. CAC POP 4 and 19 finer.
