1863-S $20 XF40 PCGS CAC
CAC Price $7,250. The 1863-S Liberty Head Double Eagle, a prized Civil War–era San Francisco Mint issue that saw heavy commercial use in the gold-driven economy of the American West, is represented here by a highly pleasing Extremely Fine survivor that offers strong originality and excellent color. Despite a mintage of 966,570 pieces, only an estimated 3,145 examples survive today across all grades, making this a notably scarce and desirable issue. The patina retains a warm, rich orange-gold complexion with even natural color across the fields and devices, complemented by relatively smooth surfaces that are notably choice for an XF example of this notoriously hard-used Type One issue. As a perennially popular Civil War date from the San Francisco Mint, this CAC-approved XF example stands as an especially desirable and highly collectible representative of a historic Western double eagle issue. No CAC example has sold and remains undervalued in true uncleaned condition.
