A Singularly Graded Pop 1 O-Mint CAC Approval and Only Four Finer.

The 1857-O Liberty Head Half Eagle is a significant New Orleans rarity and the final half eagle struck at the branch mint before the Civil War, concluding a trio of scarce O-Mint fives that began with the 1855-O. Just 13,000 pieces were struck, with an estimated 90 examples surviving today, making the issue genuinely scarce in all grades and particularly challenging at the upper AU level. Historically, the 1857-O marked the end of an era: after this issue, New Orleans would not produce another half eagle for 35 years, until the 1892-O. This impressive AU53+ PCGS CAC example displays warm honey-gold color with subtle orange-gold accents and considerable remaining mint character. The coveted AU53+ designation and CAC approval further distinguish this piece: PCGS reports just 1 example in AU53+ with 24 finer, and CAC reports only 4 finer, with no recorded CAC-approved AU53+ auction sale. In fact because so few are finer, the value climbs up quickly with AU58 at approximately $30,000. With a PCGS Price Guide: $8,000, and only 2 in AU55 makes this ripe for the perfect acquisition opportunity. In fact the only sale in 2026 was a non-CAC XF45 that sold for $5,368 06/26 HA.
