A Dramatic Snow-9 Clashed-Die 50C Gem with Fiery Color, CAC Approval and an Eagle Eye Photo Seal.

The 1857 Flying Eagle Cent Snow-9, FS-402 is one of the most dramatic and desirable varieties of the entire Flying Eagle series, created when the cent obverse die was clashed with the obverse die of a Seated Liberty half dollar. Three major clashed-die varieties are known for 1857: Snow-7 with a Double Eagle obverse, Snow-8 with a Seated Quarter reverse, and Snow-9 with a Seated Half Dollar obverse, as offered here. The partial silhouette and elements of the half dollar design remain visibly impressed around the flying eagle, creating an unmistakable artifact of the Minting process. This exceptional MS65 PCGS CAC example, additionally approved with an Eagle Eye Photo Seal, combines the celebrated variety with extraordinary visual appeal. Fiery sun-gold coloration radiates across both sides, joined by intense orange, copper-red and subtle iridescent accents, particularly through the eagle’s wings and across the reverse wreath and bow. The strike is bold, the fields retain vibrant satiny mint luster, and the surfaces are remarkably clean for the Gem grade. With an overall 1857 mintage of 17,450,000, Snow-9 represents only a tiny specialized subset of the issue and is highly sought after by Flying Eagle specialists. An NGC CAC example of this exact rare variety realized last $7,200 in 02/25 HA which lacked the color and life that this example has. As another reference point for the premium commanded by exceptional color, a rainbow-toned 1857 MS65+ PCGS CAC realized $18,212 05/2019 LE. Historically, 1857 was the inaugural year of regular-issue Flying Eagle cent production and marked the United States’ transition from the cumbersome large cent to the new small-cent format, making this remarkable mint-error variety an especially evocative survivor from a pivotal moment in American coinage. Even if this wasnt a rare variety, this coin for this eye appeal and color would already be recommended.
