A Rare Full-Red Braided Hair Half Cent with CAC Approval, Vibrant Mint Color and a Population of Just One at the Grade.
Vying with the 1853 as the most available circulation-strike Braided Hair half cent, the 1851 has long been a favorite among Mint State type collectors. Although examples were set aside in uncirculated condition, remarkably few retain enough original color to receive the coveted full Red designation. Red Half Cents have been eagerly sought after, and remain a major under-rated series still. This attractive Choice Mint State specimen retains abundant original mint frost. Satiny mint luster animates both sides, while the sharply rendered portrait, stars, wreath and lettering provide pleasing definition throughout. Deeper auburn accents gather naturally near the borders, adding character without diminishing the coin’s vibrant overall appearance. Certified MS63 RD by PCGS and approved by CAC, this is a notable condition rarity with a CAC population of just one at the grade and only four finer. In fact it is only slightly less rarer in RD than 1857. Most recent comp was for a slightly muted and subdued Red last year for 1851 1/2C MS63 RD PCGS CAC that sold for $2,939 04/25 GC.
