A Historically Important First-Year Seated Dollar with CAC Approval, Strong Definition and Exceptional Collector Value.
The 1840 Liberty Seated dollar marks the beginning of regular silver dollar production after a three-decade hiatus, becoming the first issue struck in meaningful quantities since the famous 1804-dated dollars were produced from earlier dies. Although 61,005 pieces were minted, relatively few were preserved, as the vast majority entered circulation, were exported for their bullion value, or were ultimately melted. Today, it is estimated that only approximately 2,500 examples survive in all grades, with About Uncirculated and Mint State pieces representing only a small fraction of that total. This attractive AU example exhibits brilliant silver-white surfaces complemented by soft champagne and pale golden accents around the peripheries, lending the coin exceptional originality and eye appeal. The obverse displays a well-struck portrait of Liberty with strong detail throughout the gown, shield, and hair, while the reverse is equally impressive, featuring a boldly rendered eagle with crisp feather definition, a sharp shield, and well-defined legends. The strike is notably strong for this challenging first-year issue, enhancing its overall visual appeal. A XF45 PCGS CAC lower grade example sold for $2,928 09/26 SB.
