Following the conclusion of the “Westward Journey” Nickel Series (2004–2005), the United States Mint introduced a permanent redesign of the Jefferson nickel beginning in 2006. The obverse was updated to feature a forward-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson, offering a more contemporary and engaging presentation of the third U.S. president. This new likeness was designed by Jamie Franki and sculpted by Donna Weaver, drawing inspiration from classical portraiture while incorporating modern design sensibilities.
The reverse design reverted to the traditional frontal view of Monticello, Jefferson’s Virginia estate, originally introduced in 1938. This return to the familiar architectural motif restored the visual continuity of the long-running series, following the four commemorative reverse designs featured during the bicentennial program. The 2006 redesign effectively marked a new era in the Jefferson nickel series, blending historical tradition with updated artistry, and continues to serve as the standard design used in production today.
