The 1907 $10 Indian with Rolled Rim, listed as Judd-1775, represents a fascinating transitional issue in the development of Saint-Gaudens’ iconic gold eagle design. While technically cataloged as a pattern, the Rolled Rim is not a pattern in the traditional sense. According to renowned gold specialist David Akers, these coins were struck in significant quantities for circulation but were recalled and melted before public release. The small population of surviving examples consists primarily of pieces preserved as assay coins or obtained directly from the Mint before the decision to destroy the issue.
Visually, the Rolled Rim $10 Indian closely resembles the Wire Edge variant but includes a more defined raised rimintended to improve stacking and reduce wear in circulation. The obverse features Liberty in a Native American feathered headdress, while the reverse displays a majestic perched eagle, with periods placed before and after the inscriptions—a trait shared with its Wire Edge counterpart. Struck in high relief, both the Rolled Rim and Wire Edge issues exhibit significantly more sculptural detail than the low-relief business strikes issued later in 1907.
Nearly all known examples of the Rolled Rim $10 exist in Mint State condition, with a surprisingly high percentage certified at MS65 and above. These coins exhibit exceptional luster and bold definition, making them highly coveted by advanced collectors and investors focused on U.S. gold type rarities.
Though not released into general circulation, the 1907 Rolled Rim $10 Indian is a seminal rarity in American numismatics—representing a brief yet pivotal moment in the evolution of 20th-century U.S. coinage.
