1971–1976 Eisenhower Silver Dollar | 40% Silver-Clad Collector Issues
To commemorate both the legacy of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Apollo 11 Moon landing, the U.S. Mint introduced a special silver-clad version of the Eisenhower dollar in 1971, specifically for collectors. These non-circulating issues were offered in both Mint State and Proof finishes, struck on planchets composed of the same 40% silver composition used for 1965–1970 Kennedy half dollars.
The silver-clad composition consists of:
-
Outer layers: 80% silver, 20% copper
-
Inner core: 20.9% silver, 79.1% copper
-
Total silver content: 0.3161 troy ounces per coin
These silver Eisenhower dollars were produced exclusively by the San Francisco Mint, bearing the "S" mintmark, and were never released for general circulation. They were sold to the public in official government packaging, making them a key collectible among modern silver-era U.S. coinage.
Production and Availability
From 1971 through 1974, and again for the 1776–1976 Bicentennial Type, these silver-clad issues were struck in limited quantities:
After the Bicentennial celebration, no silver-clad Eisenhower dollars were issued in 1977 or 1978, making this a finite and complete collectible sub-series within the broader Eisenhower dollar program.
