The First Silver Roosevelt Dimes – Honoring a Nation’s President
The Roosevelt silver dime debuted in 1946, soon after the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, replacing the beloved Mercury dime. The choice of denomination was fitting—Roosevelt’s leadership and public support of the March of Dimes campaign against polio made the dime a poignant tribute.
Designed by Chief Engraver John R. Sinnock, the obverse features a left-facing portrait of Roosevelt, with LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date arranged tastefully around the bust. The reverse shows a torch flanked by olive and oak branches, symbolizing liberty, peace, and strength. The inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM is nestled below, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DIME encircling the rim.
