The U.S. Trade Dollar, struck from 1873 through 1885, was created for international commerce and played an important role in American trade with China and East Asia. Designed by William Barber, the coin contains 420 grains of .900 fine silver and features a seated Liberty on the obverse and an American eagle on the reverse.
Business strikes were produced at Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco from 1873 through 1878, while Proof production continued for collectors through 1885. The rare 1884 and 1885 issues rank among the great rarities of U.S. numismatics.
