Following the disappointing reception of the heavily sandblasted 1908 proof gold coinage, Mint officials introduced this refined finish in 1909, creating surfaces that blend rich satiny texture with subtle semi-reflective brilliance. The result is a proof in 1909 a creation of Satin and Matte examples. This Satin example displays razor-sharp striking definition throughout. Beautiful original yellow-gold surfaces are enhanced by soft, vibrant mint luster flows effortlessly across both sides, producing exceptional eye appeal and remarkable originality. Every feather of the eagle and every detail of Liberty's Native American headdress remain boldly defined, reflecting the extraordinary care taken in the preparation and striking of these special proof issues.

Although the Mint prepared dies for a larger production, only 74 Proof Eagles were ultimately distributed, with the balance believed to have been melted or released into circulation. Today, specialists estimate that only 57 examples survive, making the 1909 Satin Finish Eagle one of the premier rarities of twentieth-century United States proof gold. Most examples were originally sold as part of complete proof gold sets, many of which were later broken apart, leaving remarkably few intact survivors available to today's collectors. The Satin Finish experiment itself lasted only two years before being abandoned after 1910, making these issues part of one of the shortest-lived and most distinctive proof gold formats ever produced by the United States Mint.

Adding to its desirability, no CAC-approved PR64 example has appeared at public auction in recent years, underscoring just how elusive premium-quality examples have become. With a a CAC population of just 2 with only 6 finer, and a CACG population of 1/1, this remarkable Proof Eagle ranks among the finest certified survivors available. Combining extraordinary rarity, exceptional preservation, outstanding originality, and breathtaking eye appeal. This magnificent 1909 Proof Indian Head Eagle represents a once-in-many-years opportunity to acquire one of the true trophy coins of the entire twentieth-century United States gold series. Most relevant comp is for a more common date 1911 $10 PR64 PCGS CAC that sold for $96,000 02/26 SB and an even more common 1908 $10 PR64 PCGS CAC for $85,400 09/26 SB. This is rarer and worth more not only with a 50% smaller mintage but also with a smaller number of survivors. A lack of CAC sales make the numbers and this coin undervalued in original CAC quality.

Pedigree:

The Christopher Peck Collection of Indian Eagles

CACG Cert Verification #993686426
• PCGS Price Guide - $105,000
• PCGS POP - 12/14
• CAC POP - 2/6
• CACG POP - 1/1
• PCGS Coin# - 8891

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0262/3891/0535/files/1909_Proof_Indian_Head_Eagle_10_SATIN_PR64_CACG.png?v=1791536266
