Struck in just the second year of operations at the Dahlonega Mint but first for the series, this issue bridges the transition from William Kneass’ Classic Head design of 1838 to Christian Gobrecht’s Liberty Head motif, yet it employs a noticeably different portrait style from all later Liberty half eagles, most evident in the deeper curvature of Liberty’s neck truncation and the placement of the “D” above the date. This CAC-endorsed AU53 is exceptionally sharp for the notoriously difficult issue as the strike quality usually encountered from Dahlonega was poor. The surfaces retain attractive medium yellow-gold color over green hues. Particularly impressive is the coin’s smoothness for the grade and its problem-free appearance that is increasingly difficult to locate among the estimated 150 survivors from the original mintage of 18,939 pieces. As the first Dahlonega Liberty Head half eagle and the sole obverse-mintmark issue of the entire Liberty Head D-Mint series, the 1839-D remains an indispensable type and date rarity for Southern gold specialists. No PCGS CAC example has ever sold; however, considering the fact that an NGC AU55 non-CAC that is inferior to this example is offered on the market today for $28,750 whilst a non-CAC AU55 PCGS at $35,000, we see immense value in this coin. Only 20 1839-D $5 are CAC approved in totality with this a POP 2 with 7 finer. This is one of the best coins you can purchase from a numismatic historical and grade perspective, before this coin doubles in value at the next grade at AU55.

PCGS Cert Verification #50809677

• PCGS POP - 11/32
• CAC POP - 2/7
• PCGS Coin# -8193

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0262/3891/0535/files/1839-D_Liberty_Head_Half_Eagle_5_AU53_PCGS_CAC.png?v=1791543278
